Creating a Safe Space in your School

A talk by Chelsea Cellar (she/her/hers)
Art Educator, Provo City School District

Objective: To provide teachers, administrators, and other school staff actionable methods to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students and teachers. Intended Audience: Any educator, counselor, school administrator, or board member of a school district. I would like to speak about my experience as a queer teacher (I am bisexual, and during my teaching career I got married to a transgender man) and what things my administration and school district did-- or didn't do-- to allow me to be comfortable in my role as a queer educator. This will include questions I've fielded from other educators, to give an idea of what administrators and counselors should be aware of within their school. I will also spend time talking about what steps I have taken to create a welcoming and inclusive environment in my classroom, and hopefully give educators some actionable strategies they can use to do the same, starting the very next day, in their classrooms. I will share some anecdotes of the experiences the LGBTQ+ students I've encountered have had, and their reaction to my presence and support in the schools.
